Academic summer camps offer high school students the opportunity to explore exciting career fields
Misericordia University offers rising juniors and seniors the opportunity to experience and learn about the exciting professions and residential life on a college campus in a series of six Career Exploration Camps in June. The university offers academic camps in biology and chemistry-biochemistry, mass communications and design, literature, physiotherapy, speech therapy, and teacher training. Space is limited at each camp, so registration is required.
Misericordia’s Biology and Chemistry/Biochemistry departments invite students to explore careers in the biological and chemical sciences June 26-28. This experience will be a three-day, two-night camp that will be offered to students entering their final year of high school. Students interested in learning more about careers with a degree in biology or chemistry are strongly encouraged to attend. Students will work together on interdisciplinary projects in the areas of water quality and forensics from a chemical and biological perspective. Students will also be able to work with current faculty and students at the new Frank M. and Dorothea Henry Science Center. There will be no cost for camp participants. The camp includes overnight accommodation.
The Department of Mass Communications and Design’s three-day, two-night camp runs June 26-28. The camp is designed only for students entering the 12e in the fall of 2022, who wish to explore careers in mass media. Campers will do all the work needed to create a TV show. They will shoot videos and do interviews, edit stories, write scripts, work as part of the studio team, create graphics and perform on air if they wish. Students will enjoy hands-on learning using state-of-the-art professional broadcast equipment. Current major students will serve as advisors and guides, and faculty in the department will direct the teaching. Students will create a TV magazine show, learn studio and on-location production techniques, take photos, write news articles, and design a color newspaper. Thereafter, they will receive copies of their media products as first entries in their pre-professional media portfolios. There will be no charge for camp participants and they will have residential accommodation for the night.
Literature Camp is a four-day, three-night career exploration experience taking place June 26-29, where students and faculty will explore “The Roaring 20s!” Students will join the Misericordia English faculty as they explore this exciting literary era through literature, popular culture, film, theater and music. In addition, students will tap into their creativity by leading writing and theater workshops. Professional writing exercises will also be offered. Camp participants will also interact with current English majors who will serve as camp counsellors. The camp is designed only for students entering the 12e in the fall of 2022, free of charge for a camp participant with an overnight component.
Physical Therapy Camp runs June 26-28 as a three-day, two-night residential camp and is offered to aspiring high school students wishing to explore a career as a physical therapist. Students will have the opportunity to observe the clinic on the Misericordia University campus, gain hands-on experience in multiple laboratory environments, and gain insight into the physical therapy profession. Particular attention will be given to the social determinants of health and their impact on various communities. Participants will work with Misericordia faculty, staff, and students to create a health information project during the three-day camp. There is no charge for camp attendees with one night residency for camp.
The Speech Therapy Career Exploration Camp, June 26-29, is for up-and-coming seniors. The camp familiarizes students with the many career options in the growing field of speech-language pathology. Participants tour the department’s state-of-the-art academic facilities at John J. Passan Hall, learn about the career field of guest lecturers, interact with pediatric clients, and attend live therapy sessions at the Speech and Hearing Center. Speech-language pathologists work in schools, hospitals, nursing facilities, home care facilities, outpatient care centers, child care centers and institutions of higher learning. The cost of this camp is $125.00. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from camp. This is not an overnight camp. Misericordia University will provide transportation during the camp.
Teacher Training Camp runs June 26-28 for a three-day, two-night career exploration experience for aspiring high school students for the 2022-2023 school year. They will participate in various sessions that will introduce them to the teaching profession and the faculty of the Department of Teacher Education (TED). TED faculty will host interactive sessions that will highlight the content areas/topics that early childhood, special education, and middle school teachers teach and showcase some cutting-edge technologies that the department uses to prepare teachers in initial training. These hands-on, interactive experiences also focus on student diversity and what it means to be an effective, student-centered teacher in the 21st century. Camp attendees will also interact with current TED majors who will serve as camp counselors. There is no charge for camp participants and they will have a residence for the night.
