Leimert Park Jazz Festival launches its 2nd annual artistic competition
Artists from South Los Angeles are invited to submit their work for a chance to win $ 1,000!
The Leimert Park Jazz Festival Art Competition is looking for artists from South Los Angeles to capture the vibrant jazz music and culture of Leimert Historic Park. The winner will be recognized as the official visual artist of the Leimert Park Jazz Festival 2021 and will receive a cash prize of $ 1,000.
To participate, artists must be 18 years of age or older and submit an original, newly created two-dimensional work of art on canvas. The subject must visually represent jazz music, jazz culture and the dynamism of Leimert Park. Art submissions must be sent by Friday July 16, 2021, no later than 11:59 p.m.

The esteemed members of this year’s jury are: Aziz Diagne, artist and gallery owner; Ben Caldwell,
Owner, KAOS Network; Todd Hawkins, Chairman of the California African American Museum (CAAM) Board of Trustees; and Wendell Wiggins, winner of last year’s inaugural art competition. The judges will choose three finalists; the winner will be chosen by a community vote on social media.
“I was fortunate to have my work selected by the voting community last year as the first to represent the Leimert Park Jazz Festival,” said Wiggins. “I always get congratulatory messages and have had many creative opportunities for many other organizations as a result of my participation. Last year’s events were spectacular, so I am very honored to contribute once again as a member of the team that will help select the future winner of this year’s competition.
“I am delighted and excited to be a judge in the 2nd annual Leimert Park Jazz Festival Art Competition, ”said Hawkins. “I believe in the importance of not only celebrating local artists, but also elevating and amplifying their incredible work for greater visibility and appreciation.”
The historic community of Leimert Park in South LA is a culturally rich neighborhood and, for decades, has served as the center of African-American art, music, and culture in Los Angeles. Renowned arts institutions such as The World Stage Performance Gallery, The Vision Theater, Barbara Morrison Center for the Performing Arts, KAOS Network, Fernando Pullum Community Arts Center and Art + Practice have made their home in Leimert Park.
“The Leimert Park Jazz Festival is a celebration of the jazz, community and cultural heritage of Leimert Park,” said festival executive producer Diane Robertson. “The art competition is a great complement to the festival and fits perfectly into the history of the creative arts of the community in Los Angeles. I am delighted to offer this competition as a platform for local artists and a way to showcase the immense talent of our community. I imagine the festival and arts competition will play an important role in ensuring that this vibrant community remains culturally important for years to come.
The Leimert Park Jazz Festival 2021 will take place on Saturday August 28 at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza. Doors open at 2 p.m., performances start at 3 p.m. and end at 8 p.m.
The festival is produced by Robertson in association with Dwight Trible and The World Stage. The festival grew out of the Sutro Avenue Summer Soiree, an annual community neighborhood party that kicked off in 2015 on a residential street in Leimert Park. A jazz scene was added to the evening in 2018 and 2019, and the event was renamed Leimert Park Jazz Festival in 2020. Its mission is to build and strengthen community while celebrating and showcasing the spirit artistic and cultural heritage of the historic district of Leimert Park. in South Los Angeles. The live event brings together a culturally and family-friendly diverse audience to enjoy a fun day with a community resource zone, health and wellness zone, children’s zone, food truck zone , dance, art and, of course, exceptional jazz concerts by local and world-renowned musicians.
