PRESS RELEASE

Matthew Sontheimer
Continued Narrative
September 6 - October 18, 2008

Dunn and Brown Contemporary is pleased to announce the opening of Matthew Sontheimer: Continued Narrative. The exhibition will be on view in the gallery’s Project Space from September 6 through October 18, 2008.

Consisting of four new drawings on Mylar film and nine drawings on found postcards, Continued Narrative continues Sontheimer’s interest in creating an encoded language by redrawing selected words taken from various literary sources or re-arranging the existing text on the postcards. Much like his earlier works, these new drawings must still be decoded by the viewer but the underlying source material and imagery have become more easily deciphered. Though still intimating an interaction with the viewer, these drawings allow for new, fluctuating connections with the text:

One’s thoughts on an image or the written works are not always readily apparent. Closer observation and scrutiny on the details of what has been presented on the page gives a greater understanding of the characters in play, but following the patterns they travel in (observed from varying distances) is what allows the viewer or reader to find a personal understanding with what they are confronting. Balancing this combination of search and distance is a large part of what these new drawings are about. My works continue to pay homage to the relationship and correspondence that initially inspired my earlier language based work, and though the approach is different, the goal is still the same: to create an intimate discussion with the viewer.

Born in 1969 in New Orleans, Louisiana, Matthew Sontheimer currently lives and works in North Texas. He received his B.F.A. in 1992 from Stephen F. Austin State University, and his M.F.A. from Montana State University in Bozeman in 1995. Previously serving on the faculty at at the University of Houston, Sontheimer is currently an assistant professor at the University of North Texas in the College of Art and Design.

Sontheimer’s works have been shown in numerous exhibitions nationally, including the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Jones Center for Contemporary Art in Austin, and the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art.
