PRESS RELEASE
Laurence Scholder
Variations
May 31 - Jul 12, 2008
Dunn and Brown Contemporary is pleased to announce the opening of Laurence Scholder: Variations. This exhibition will be on view in the gallery’s Project Space from May 31 through July 12, 2008.
Devoted exclusively to the fine art of printmaking, Scholder has distinguished himself over the past three decades as a legendary and influential printmaker. Variations represents a significant shift in Scholder’s career as the 20 relief etchings diverge from the artist’s prior linear works into more organic shapes. For fifteen of the etchings, Scholder hand-colored over three repeated prints with aniline dye, commonly used in wood and leather stains to create bright, bold colors and variations of color.
Scholder creates his etchings through a process in which drawn marks are eaten into a metal plate by acid. The plate is then coated with a thinly applied acid-resistant ground. Using various tools to draw through the ground, the metal plate is then immersed in an acid bath. Through this sequence depressed lines in the etching plate appear, which allow the plate to be inked and printed. Scholder’s etchings are printed in relief rather than in intaglio. As a result, the drawn lines appear in the finished works as white lines on an inked ground. Scholder’s etchings are exquisitely rendered studies in line, shape, depth, and precision.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Scholder has lived and worked in Dallas, Texas for over thirty years and has been an instrumental figure in the development of the art community of North Texas. After receiving his B.F.A. from Carnegie Institute of Technology and M.A. from the University of Iowa, he joined the faculty at Southern Methodist University in the late 1960s. Currently a distinguished member of the faculty holding a full professorship, Scholder has previously acted as Chair of the Division of Art for eight years as well received the Meadows Distinguished Teaching Professorship. As an artist, teacher, and mentor, Scholder has influenced and shaped many generations of artists in Texas over the past 30 years.
Scholder’s works have been exhibited widely in museums across the country including the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Detroit Art Institute.
Laurence Scholder will be present at the opening reception on Saturday, May 31, from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.
