PRESS RELEASE

Sam Reveles
Subtle Body
March 2 through March 31, 2001

Dunn and Brown Contemporary is pleased to announce a one-person exhibition of recent work by London-based artist Sam Reveles. Sam Reveles: Subtle Body includes over twenty works on paper and paintings completed within the past year. The exhibition reflects the artist=s ongoing interest in abstraction and figuration combined with his attention to the viewer=s first-hand experience with color. In these works, images of figures surface from beneath the abstract paintings much in the same way that fragmented images appear in onfiltered=s own memory. Taken from life, the hidden figures under these paintings are revealed sporadically in each work. The reach of an arm, the bend of a leg, and the turn of a head appear from one work to another. Free from narrative, these paintings capture the subtleties of gesture and human interaction on the most basic level.

Reveles's keen sense of color and the chromatic brilliance of his compositions are most evident in this recent body of work. Through a complex use of color and active brushwork, Reveles deeply saturates the surface of each work on paper and painting, convincing the viewer that the color is coming from within each piece. Working from the vantage point of postmodern abstraction, Reveles's works fuse figurative painting with traditional non-figurative abstraction. Moreover, for Reveles, abstraction has become a personal vehicle for investigating a myriad of cultural references and influences. Through an exploration and an awareness of both western and non-western art history, Reveles embraces the subtleties of differing cultural traditions.

Originally from El Paso, Texas, Reveles now lives and works in London, England. In 1987, he received his M.F.A. from the Yale University School of Art and Architecture, and in 1995, Reveles was included in the prestigious Whitney Biennial Exhibition. Soon after, Sam Reveles: Drawings was organized by The Saint Louis Art Museum, and Sam Reveles: Recent Paintings and Drawings was organized by the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston in 1998. His work can be found in the permanent collections of museums across the country, including the Dallas Museum of Art, Saint Louis Art Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Centro de Arte Contemporaneo in Mexico City.

Sam Reveles will be present at the opening reception on Friday, March 2 from 6 until 8 p.m.. Dunn and Brown Contemporary is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00 until 5:00 and by appointment.
