PRESS RELEASE
Amy Myers
Heterotic String Series
May 10 through June 8, 2002
Dunn and Brown is pleased to announce an exhibition of recent work by Los Angeles-based artist, Amy Myers. Over the past two years, Myers has been the focus of one-person exhibitions in Chicago and New York. This exhibition at Dunn and Brown Contemporary will be Myers’ first in Texas. Her distinctive work consists of large-scale drawings that lyrically document a fascination with the laws and postulates of physics.
Each tremendously complex drawing, developed over an extended period of time, is a diagram of an effort by Myers to interpret scientific and mathematical principles and imagine their forms. Using graphite, ink, and gouache on toned paper, Myers constructs an intricate network of lines that fan out from a central point or axis. Organic shapes evolve in near symmetry, forming a vast, enigmatic symbol. Through tremendous attention to minute detail, Myers methodically layers and builds each finished drawing to over seven feet square. With a scientific source for all marks in each monumental drawing, Myers explains the evolution of her work:
The perspective of particle physics is one of a universe without "stuff." All particles exist with the potential to combine with and become different particles. They are intermediate states in a network of interactions and are based upon events, not things.
The title of the exhibition, Heterotic String Series, is derived from the Greek word Heterosis, meaning a vigorous hybrid. In physics, it refers to a string or the elemental component of matter and energy. A heterotic string is a closed system that vibrates both clockwise and counterclockwise in the 10th and 26th dimensions, becoming an illogical mystery. This condition fascinates Myers through her visual investigation of the unpredictable nature of the universe.
Amy Myers lives and works in Los Angeles. She was born in Taylor, Texas in 1965 and received her B.F.A. from Kansas City Art Institute in 1995 and her M.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1999. Since completing graduate school, Myers has exhibited in one person exhibitions in San Francisco, Chicago, and New York, as well as group exhibitions across the country. Just over a year ago, Myers’ first one-person museum exhibition was organized by the University Art Museum at California State University in Long Beach. And most recently, Myers received the highly prestigious Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation Award along with an upcoming studio residency in New York City.
Amy Myers will be present for the opening reception on Friday, May 10 from 6:00 until 8:00. Dunn and Brown Contemporary is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
