PRESS RELEASE
Anne Marie Jugnet and Alain Clairet
On The Horizon
February 17 through March 24, 2007
Dunn and Brown Contemporary is proud to announce the first solo exhibition in Dallas, Texas for internationally renowned French artists Anne Marie Jugnet and Alain Clairet. Jugnet and Clairet have been working collaboratively for the past ten years in France and have exhibited in numerous prestigious museums and galleries throughout Europe. On The Horizon presents a new body of work inspired by their recent relocation to Santa Fe, New Mexico and will include paintings, watercolor on paper, photographs, and small abstract marble sculptures.
On The Horizon represents an ongoing investigation into the form of landscapes both in the medium of abstract painting and sculpture. The gallery walls will be lined with nine large abstract landscape paintings, each portraying a spectrum of colors inspired by sunsets. These abstracted sunsets are portrayed through horizontal bands of color meticulously applied to each canvas. Carved from Italian marble in Carrara, Italy, smaller marble tabletop sculptures also included in the exhibition, are direct observations of the cloud forms in the sky. The artists themselves describe their process and inspiration for this body of work.
"By living in the Southwest, we liked to envisage the landscape as a fixed point, watching the bright variations of the sky and the clouds in the course of formation and deformation. We began by doing small-format watercolors, formed by stripes of colors; each day a sunset. Then we brushed large formats of acrylic paintings. These two first pieces allowed us to locate the frame of our research. We continued this series with a spray gun, giving a barely observable curve to the stripes of color, using only transparent pigments. The sunsets speak about colors, the clouds carved in marble, about forms. Both distanced from their reference point, they leave the imagination open, and try to approach what could today be a landscape painting."
Facing the Sunset paintings, a series of watercolors entitled Sun show details taken from a fresco of Fra Angelico in the San Marco monastery in Florence, Italy. These watercolors are small, yet intense, moments when a picture reveals itself. The body of work in On The Horizon is completed with a grouping of photographs. These photographs capture a sliver of a building rooftop and the vastly empty surrounding skies.
Anne Marie Jugnet and Alain Clairet met in 1995 on a trip to New York. They began working together in Paris in 1997. The pair currently lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
