May 31 - Jul 12, 2008
Dunn and Brown Contemporary is pleased to announce I-35 Biennial Invitational 2008 featuring the work of eight artists: Ellissa Collier, Garrett Davis, John Frost, Nathan Green, Iva Gueorguieva, Kara Hearn, Jonathan Marshall, and Jill Pangallo. Dunn and Brown Contemporary began this year with an open call for artists to be included in the gallery’s second Biennial Invitational. The only restriction on applicants was a maximum age of thirty-five years old. After reviewing nearly two hundred applicants, an innovative and fresh exhibition of the following eight artists was assembled.
I-35 Biennial Invitational 2008 will include works on paper, drawings, sculpture, photographs, video, animation, and installation-based works. Ellissa Collier, an M.F.A. graduate from Rutgers University, currently lives and works in Philadelphia where she creates installation based work. For the exhibition at Dunn and Brown Contemporary, Ellissa will exhibit “Filtration and Collection Unit,” an installation made of multicolored buckets, mesh, and tarp, representing the “do-it-yourself” approach to the basic question of water collection. Also from Philadelphia, with a BFA from Maryland Institute College of Art, Garrett Davis will exhibit a large collection of drawings displayed amongst a hand-drawn animation video.
John Frost, whose work is directed by a synergy of experiences, chance discoveries and an intuitive response to materials and processes, graduated with his M.F.A in 2000 from Texas Christian University. For this exhibition, Frost will construct a sculpture made from imperfect by-products of a wood mill. With a B.F.A from the University of Texas, Austin, Nathan Green’s work was chosen for its depiction of radiant visions of unrealistic and impossible situations through brightly colored and energetic paintings.
I-35 Biennial Invitational 2008 will also feature a collection of collage works on paper by Iva Gueorguieva. Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, Iva received her M.F.A. from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University, Philadelphia. She currently lives and teaches in Los Angeles, California. A current CORE Artist Resident at the Glassell School of Art in Houston, Kara Hearn’s video is an homage to the work of Bas Jan Ader. Twelve people were asked to sit alone and try and make themselves cry. The final video includes three minutes of each person’s response.
Representing the only photography in the exhibition, Jonathan Marshall received his B.F.A. from The University of Texas, Austin. His digital prints follow the story of Lenny, the first protagonist in a post-apocalyptic adventure story shaped by the traditional journey of a hero. Jill Pangallo is currently finishing her M.F.A at the University of Texas at Austin. The video that will be exhibited at Dunn and Brown Contemporary is a persona-based performance documentation and video titled “Nancy Series.” These videos follow the character Nancy, otherwise know as the “invisible woman” through the mall, at a job interview, and as a spokesperson for an art-making event.
The artists will be present at the opening of I-35 Biennial Invitational on Saturday May 31, from 6:00 - 8:00 PM. Dunn and Brown Contemporary is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00 am until 5:00 pm and by appointment. Please contact Sarah Stork at the gallery or via e-mail at sstork@dunnandbrown.com for additional information or to request visuals of the exhibition.
